In an increasingly diverse and interconnected healthcare system, cultural competence is no longer optional—it is essential. Nurses are often at the forefront of patient interaction, making their ability to navigate cultural beliefs, values, and practices fundamental to the delivery of high-quality care. Cultural competency allows nurses to build trust, enhance communication, reduce health disparities, and improve patient satisfaction and outcomes. However, as the healthcare landscape evolves, so too must the training and support systems that foster this critical skill. Despite its recognized importance, cultural competence remains inconsistently implemented across nursing curricula and clinical environments. This research aims to explore how structured interventions and continuous learning shape culturally responsive nursing care in real-world settings.

Why This Topic Needs Research

Cultural competence is critical, yet there are still pressing gaps in how it is taught, applied, and measured:

  • Limited evidence on long-term impact of training: Although cultural competence is linked to professional values and spiritual well-being, there is little research on how immersive or experiential learning strengthens competence across nursing roles and settings (Nazari et al., 2025).

  • Unclear clinical translation of staff knowledge: While training improves awareness, its long-term influence on clinical behavior, collaboration, and quality of culturally responsive care remains underexplored (Woodfaulk-Trent, 2025).

  • Gap between learning and post-graduate application: Pedagogical strategies help students, but studies have not assessed how sustained curricular integration ensures cultural competence post-graduation (Putra et al., 2025).

  • Limited understanding of assessment tool application: Validation studies exist, but practical use of tools like the Dutch Cultural Competence Assessment to enhance care quality and equity has not been evaluated (Sutharson et al., 2025).

  • Religion-specific training remains underdeveloped: Though nurses showed cultural awareness when caring for Muslim patients, the effect of formal Islamic-specific training on patient outcomes has not been studied (Contaoi, 2025).

  • Perception gaps between nurses and patients: Nurses self-report cultural competence, but patients often perceive quality differently. Long-term interventions are needed to close this gap (Barral et al., 2023).

  • Cultural tools in mental health remain underused: Tools exist for Filipino nurses in mental health care, but their integration into practice and effect on stigma and outcomes need further study (Rubio, 2022).
